On New Year’s Eve in 2017 we went for a drive in the Glen of Aherlow, and took a wrong turn and had to stop while a parade of tractors went past. I turned around and saw the cows, and even though they were covered with muck and bawling and shitting everywhere, they glowed in the early evening low sun. They reminded me of my childhood on the farm near Carrick-on-Suir, and of all the stories of ancient Ireland, including the Táin Bó Cúailnge, known as ‘The Irish Iliad’ - but with cows.
