Drawn on location. After a strenuous hike up the hill, punctuated by explanations of certain Hiberno-English expressions to an American lady also climbing up, I took a rest to sketch the Great Blasket, the largest of the Blasket Islands archipelago and the most westerly island group of mainland Europe. I know it best from the stories that came from there - for a tiny community, it produced some notable Irish-language story-tellers: Peig Sayers, Tomás O’Crohán, Seán O’Crohán and Maurice O’Sullvan. The Great Blasket has no water supply of its own and can be cut off for several weeks in wintertime, which was why it was depopulated during the 1950s. You can visit it by boat in the summer, and even stay overnight in the village there. As I drew it I thought about Peig Sayers, whose story was taught as part of the Irish-language curriculum when I was growing up. I thought of the summer I went to Irish College near there, all the people I had met. Where are they now?
