The landscape of the Burren looks like an alien planet, but it’s teeming with life, and there are pockets of forests, lakes that disappear underground occasionally, unexpected meadows, and gorgeous, special unusual flowers in the spring and summer. Local farmers let their cattle and sheep winter in the hills of the High Burren, on top of hills like Mulloughmore, and cows and sheep share these wild spaces with the wild goats. I see the many ringforts, dolmens, wedge tombs and other ancient monuments from thousands of years ago and wonder how many stories are lost, or are morphed into legends of giants and maidens and heroes and shape-changers like the Pooka. Tantalising. A long, long way ….
