Absent Swans, Coole Park

€165.00

2024, Acrylic on 3-D canvas, 25x35 cm (9.8x13.8 inches)

It wasn’t until after I went to Coole Park for the second time that I revisited William Butler Yeats’ famous poem about the wild swans that swam on this lake. The poem is supposed to be a lament, as he didn’t marry his first love Maude Gonne (she married someone else), but given that the poem was written between 1916 and 1917, I can’t help but wonder if it might not also be a lament for the executed fighters of the 1916 Rising, or possibly for the young men who perished in what was then known as the Great War, or First World War : “Their hearts have not grown old”.
