Anyone near where this couple are sitting on 1 May 1915 might have witnessed the destruction of the ocean liner the Lusitania, which was attacked by a U-boat, which is believed to have resulted in the USA becoming involved in World War I. Dublin art dealer and collector Hugh Lane was on the ship and died during this attack, but his wonderful collection is still open to the public in Dublin city centre, and is generally considered to be one of the first collections of Modern Art.
At one time the Old Head of Kinsale was thought to be the most southerly point of Ireland, but this is now known to be Mizen Head, located further west.
Visiting the Lighthouse at the tip of the Head seems to be a hit-and-miss affair, and most of the tiny peninsula is now a golf course. Otherwise you can sit by the edge of the cliff and admire the views … and check your messages, like the woman in the painting.
