The high walls on Inisheer (Inis Oírr) form a sheltered suntrap in summer for cows out at grass – in a place that seemed like the edge of the world. Some of the stone walls on the Aran Islands are 2 metres high and over a metre thick, and were built by hand. Islanders are tough, but understand history in a very special way. The poet Máirtín Ó Díreáin wrote about how in the official state archives in Dublin, the names of people on paper are buried in dusty drawers and forgotten, while on the Aran Islands the walls are named for the people who built them, and become a monument to their memory. And also shelter cows.
